Scholarcards Research Findings

1. IT IS BASED ON SYLLABUS CONTENT- This product is so relevant in so many aspects and it is definitely fun, while still facilitating academic progress. SCHOLARCARDS teaches Math, Science, Vocabulary etc, in order to prepare students for performance in exams according to the syllabus. It captures syllabus content in summarized form and makes it accessible to the learner in a ready format for easy learning and revision.

2. THE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS LOVE IT- We have visited over 300 Primary schools and presented our SCHOLARCARDS in the classroom as a teaching/learning tool. Every school gives us positive feedback. The students are comfortable and happy playing the game and a wholesome classroom atmosphere is easily maintained by the supervising teacher. At the end, we get comments on how students that were not working before are responding well with SCHOLARCARDS and at the same time the good performers are being motivated to even do better.

3. IT HAS SOLID SCIENTIFIC AND EXPERT BACKING- SCHOLARCARDS has a scientific base. It is based on CONSTRUCTIVISM applying an effective learning theory called ‘OVERLEARNING’, where students master knowledge for the purpose of performing it efficiently in exams and in the real world. Memorization skills are improved and information is retained permanently in the students’ minds. Real play is always a strong motivator, but most times to contradict learning. Now it is used in enhancing learning.

4. IT HAS MEASURABLE ACADEMIC EFFECTS- Every teacher likes to be able to report on their students’ improvement to the parents and to the principal. SCHOLARCARDS is used and assessed via  written scores which are entered into score sheets by the players, to determine the student’s actual benefit. The game teaches specific bits of information that are measured for assessment by the teacher or parent.

5. SCHOLARCARDS IS A NEW LEARNING CULTURE- This concept works in any  school system to foster a new and effective culture in education. Let us motivate and encourage our students to work hard in order to do well and not to look for the ’easy button’ approach to education. Understand your studies, know the relevant facts that will allow you to express that understanding in words and in practice, master your knowledge and understanding so that you can be professional at what you do and let us put more responsibility for learning on the learner, with SCHOLARCARDS.

In addition to the benefits listed above, we also recommend EDUCARDS/SCHOLARCARDS for use in the home for the following reasons:

1         IT IS AN ADULT-FRIENDLY GAME- This product is in a form that provides the same academic information as text books but in a much less intimidating way to the adult that has not been studying for a long time. Parents can contribute so much to their children’s education but so many times they themselves do not remember the details of the relevant subject to be able to assist their kids with homework. Educards allows the parent to become updated or to be reminded of academic content without having to become a student themselves so that they can teach while playing. Parents have fun also with EDUCARDS/SCHOLARCARDS.

2         THE FAMILY AND THE COMMUNITY WILL BENEFIT - We have received enough feedback from principals and teachers to convince us that the family and the community need to be more involved in the education process and that this is achieved through the introduction of EDUCARDS/SCHOLARCARDS.

It is true that in most cases, if the home has poor educational ethics ( low literacy, lack of esteem for education etc) the child will have problems achieving educational objectives set by the teacher. We must therefore solve the educational problems in the home in order to impact fully on the child at school. The family can sit informally and interact with Scholarcards in Math, English etc, or can invite the neighbor over to fellowship in an educational environment learning and having fun. This will surely impact positively on the child and foster a wholesome attitude toward his/her education.

3 IT SIMPLY INCREASES MEANINGFUL CONTACT TIME WITH ACADEMIC INFORMATION– This puts the student at an advantage because there is mastery of academic information without stress. Experience has shown that there is a direct correlation between examination performance and the amount of time spent studying. The fact that the three games create real entertainment to the player means that students will be motivated to play even after doing other forms of studies or as a means of overcoming boredom at home.

EXAMS DEMAND THAT WE LEARN FACTS

If we are to do well at exams, especially at the lower and middle school levels, we MUST learn facts and be able to recall and use these facts effectively.

Factual knowledge forms the base of  all understanding. We can only meaningfully discuss and assimilate information when we have the facts at our disposal, either in written form or in our memory. I say , the more we commit relevant and understood facts to memory, the better  we perform at exams in the end.

Principles of learning

1. Learning is an active process in which the learner uses sensory input and constructs meaning out of it.

2. People learn to learn as they learn.

3. The crucial action of constructing meaning is mental.

4. Learning involves language: the language we use influences learning.

5. Learning is a social activity.

6. Learning is contextual.

7. One needs knowledge to learn.

8. It takes time to learn.

9. Motivation is a key component in learning.

Most educators have accepted the idea that learners need to be active.
